Are Your Songwriting Ideas All Stopped Up?
Songwriting Ideas can be a problem....
Where do they come from? (I've written about your motivation for ideas in
You Have to Care/They Have to Care.
You might want to check it out.) But let's look at writer's block from a different perspective. What can help prime the pump? You think back teary-eyed, remembering the good ole days, when your songwriting ideas were flowing like Niagara Falls. Coming faster and more furious than you could catch them all! Then there's now....nothing.... My number one advice is simple. Get away from the written page. Get away from sitting at the "drawing board" and trying to make something happen. Get out! Go to see movies, go to museums, go to plays, go to concerts, listen to new music...anything but sitting and staring at the blank page. (Even getting out and taking a walk, or going to a some sort of gathering can help.) Choosing to do this will be your saving grace. Listening to new material will stimulate your creative juices, and prime the pump. This may sound oversimplified, but it is KEY! Don't think of yourself in the middle of a writer's block. Think of your writing journey as having various "legs" along the way. You are just on a different "leg" of the journey. You get on a sub-station, to take you to a bus, that will take you to the airport. There you will SOAR in a jet across the sea! So, maybe you're on a leg of the journey that is not as glamorous. Maybe you're sitting in the sub-station. But you are headed for that jet...remember that...trust the process. So get out. Stimulate your creativity. You'll be amazed where these "detours" will take you on the journey. Because they aren't detours at all! They are another part of the songwriting process. They are the stimulus for great songwriting ideas.
And so be patient, lighten up....and enjoy that "bus ride"...you never know where you might end up.
